This is not your everyday zodiac fashion post.
Astrology is a unique practice. On the one hand, it’s everywhere: practically everyone knows their sign (by which they mean their sun sign -- the sign you can find simply by knowing the day you were born). On the other hand, few people know that we each have many signs, and, what’s more, that astrology is made up of a number of layers, each of which is understood to act as an influence upon us (just check your birth chart).
This post isn’t going to tell you that if you’re a Scorpio, you’ll love kinky lingerie, or if you’re a Capricorn, you best stick to earth tones. None of that basic shit for us.
I want to emphasize how much the energy of each sign is available to every one of us, in varying intensities and degrees. After all, we all spend time under each sign during the year!
The energies of each sign are especially accessible when it comes to style, when it comes to accessing different moods as we play dress-up and try to figure out which face we are presenting to the world (or in the bedroom) today.
Though this isn't an Astrology 101 primer (far from it), here are three fast facts before we jump in:
- What is astrology? Kevin Burk, author of Understanding the Birth Chart, gives an accessible definition: “Astrology is the study of cycles. By observing the cyclical movements of the planets, we are able to gain a greater understanding of the cycles and patterns in our own lives.”
- You'll notice that one category under each sign is "Quality." Along with dividing the zodiac up by the four elements, it can also be devoted into three "qualities": cardinal, fixed, and mutable. Each elemental grouping (e.g. all the fire signs) always contains one of each quality. Think of the cardinal signs as the squad leader, the fixed sign as the embodiment of the sign's essence, holding down the fort, and the mutable sign as the adventurous younger sibling who is off doing their own thing.
- I approach astrology like I approach tarot -- a useful tool for self-reflection and self-empowerment. I'm not an avid practitioner of astrology, just someone who likes to research new things. Share your own experience and insights in the comments!
Let's get started.
Fire inspires. Fire signs are known for their courage, their adventurous spirits, their Big Personalities (which can come with a big temper). But they have equally big hearts.
Air connects. Air signs are all about communication and engendering strong connections and greater understanding between people. Insightful and curious, these signs have a strong impulse to understand the world around them.
Why start with this pairing? The moon is in Leo, astrologically speaking, and Aries is the initiator of the zodiac, so to not start with the Fire signs would have just been wrong. And Air is Fire's strongest elemental pairing.
