So you’re cosplaying for a con this year. You fucking rock. You are also probably already preparing your costume.
Though y'all probs have all the tumblrs and blogs and reddit threads in the world bookmarked, here's one more for the pile: some tips for your lingerie and underthings, from someone who’s been to NYCC, knows a few things about underwear, and wants to see you rock the shit out of that costume.
How to Bind Your Chest Safely
Is gender fuckery in your near future? First off, I love you. Second, you absolutely do not need to bind in order to genderqueer the system. But if you want to bind and don’t have experience doing so, here are some safety tips:
- Do not, for the love of God, do not use an Ace bandage (or duct tape, or other makeshift solutions). Yes, that video of Ruby Rose using an Ace bandage is super hot and she’s totally your bae and I love her to bits but I also kind of hate that she perpetuated the Ace bandage myth because I PROMISE SHE KNOWS BETTER. Ace bandages are not safe. Please please please do not use one. Wear an actual binder made for chest binding.
- Also, do not buy or borrow a binder that is too small. This can (literally) hurt you, and not just in the “oh, I’m wearing a binder and it hurts” kind of way that you hear about—it can do very real damage.
- Practice wearing the binder before the day of the con. You’re gonna be in that mofo all day and it’s good to be used to it before actually being in it for like twelve hours.
