Our featured product review for Pride Month comes from queer lingerie blogger Denocte of Kurvendiskussionen. She's reviewing everyone's favorite Rainbow Hipsters by one of our fave designers ever, Knickerocker.
For transparency: I bought this item full price from Bluestockings Boutique.
To be honest, I loved these knickers ever since I first saw pictures. It’s cute, it’s gorgeous and it’s so goddamn gay that I just had to had it. It’s both gay as in happy as well as queer as in fuck you - which is perfect, because I’m both a very happy person and a very queer one too (bisexual cis woman).
Also, isn’t it the PERFECT pair of knickers for pride month?
I’m lusting after Knickerocker items for a long while now, especially the signature animal knickers are a personal favourite. I ended up never buying them because I don’t really know how to wear/combine them. So this pair of pants is a perfect alternative: They are awesome but still casual enough for everyday wear even under a pair of tight trousers or a tight skirt!
Style and Quality
The bum is obviously what really catches your eye - it’s a colourful rainbow! On your bum!
Each of the six colours is made from a separate strap of fabric - not painted or printed on.
On the front you see the super cute sun and clouds and raindrops. Because there’s no rainbow without some rain!
The body of the sun is a yellow appliqué, the sun rays as well as the clouds and raindrops are painted (I think stencilled?) onto the fabric by hand. And also super cute. Since the fabric is a soft cotton jersey it stretches a bit, and stencils don’t. So it is not avoidable that, if you put the fabric under tension, the clouds look a bit torn. But this only really happens when you stretch it so you can put it on, once you wear it everything lies smooth and pretty again.
The fold-over elastics used on the hems are such a well fit colourwise, which really impresses me as I know what a hassle it can be to find matching elastics!
One thing I think has room to improve is the finishing of the elastics - I’m wearing (and, hence, washing) these knickers quite a lot and the edges of the elastics frizz out. Personally I would consider sewing the ends of the elastics either in a fold over way or use a tiny zig zag stitch to secure the edges from fraying.
For my ~99cm bum I chose size M knickers and they fit perfectly.
The knickers are a really comfortable style of briefs, with a good coverage of the bum and not too low rise.
I hate when knickers aren’t made with more voluptuous bums in mind and I’m constantly exposing my butt crack. We don’t want that!
(the inside-out view!)
These knickers fit nicely and although there are a lot of seams on the back (because awesome rainbow) the yarn is soft enough that the seams don’t bulk or scratch. And my skin is fairly sensitive in that area - sorry for the maybe TMI but I thought it was worth noting as it was something I was worried about!
Longevity: achieved! I’m wearing these a lot and I’m even putting them in the washing machine now I fixed the fraying edges and the print is still perfect.
It’s of course better to wash them with a gentle rinse but if you are a lazy person like me and throw it in the washing machine now and then, it doesn’t hurt the print! Yay!
I love these knickers and I am thinking of buying another one because it’s also such a cute pair to just lounge around in the garden on hot summer days. And because there’s maybe nothing better than being able to say “I’ve got a rainbow on my butt, wanna see?”
P.P.S. Pre-order your rainbow knickers here! (The designer behind Knickerocker is currently on break, and we will be getting her knickers when she returns!)
